Transcontinental to print Vancouver Sun
VANCOUVER—TC Transcontinental Printing has signed a five-year deal to print Postmedia's Vancouver Sun starting in 2015, building on a recent agreement to print the Calgary Herald.

Postmedia Network began outsourcing the Calgary Herald's printing to Transcontinental in November. When the deal was announced, Postmedia also revealed it would sell its Kennedy Heights printing plant in B.C. come February 2015, which prints the Vancouver Sun and the Province.

Postmedia initially asked Vancouver union reps to "develop alternatives" to the Kennedy Heights plant. Following a negotiation period ending Nov. 18, the union deemed Postmedia's employment conditions for a new plant to be "too extreme to accept." The proposed plant would have retained an estimated 25% of Kennedy Heights union staff members.

The Vancouver Sun, which is published Monday to Saturday, will be printed in 2015 on a hybrid platform at Transcontinental's Vancouver facility. According to a Transcontinental release, no new investments will be needed to accommodate the additional workload.

*UPDATE: Upon the Kennedy Heights closure, Postmedia will outsource printing of the Province to B.C.-based Black Press.
