Print Industry Jobs To Fall 20% In Five Years
COLOGNY, SWITZERLAND—
The global print industry will see its headcount shrink by 20% over the next five years, according to a report from the World Economic Forum – but industry figures have said a decline in jobs does not make for a declining industry. The report claimed print and related trades would see the sixth-fastest decline in jobs, and the fastest decline among manufacturing sectors. What it does not say is that the printing industry is in decline only that jobs in the industry are in decline.
The continual advance of press room technology, including intelligent automation, will cause a shift from repetitive manual jobs. A lot of printers are still finding it difficult to find qualified staff to the point it is effecting how much equipment they buy. As one owner commented why buy a $5 mullion press when you can not find any one to run it? There has been steady consolidation in the printing industry with bigger player buying up smaller players ( Data bought RR Donnelley Canada, Cober bought West Canadian Digital, Solisco buys Group ETR and recently Allcard bought Ampersand Printing ). There are a lot fewer start ups than ever before, partly because the cost of entry is getting so hight.
