Canada Post Strike Possible In December
OTTAWA—

Canada Post has been trying to increase direct mail. Possible strike dos not help.
Canada Post continues to negotiate with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) to reach new collective agreements. Negotiations with CUPW began in November 2023 and so far, the parties have met more than 100 times. Following eight months of negotiations, CUPW filed notices of dispute with the Minister of Labour on August 2, 2024. CUPW has begun holding a strike vote with its members to receive a strike mandate.

The federal Minister of Labour appointed two conciliation officers on August 13, 2024. The conciliation period typically lasts 60 days. A labour disruption cannot happen during conciliation. After the conciliation period, if there is still no agreement and the parties do not agree to extend, a 21-day cooling-off period follows. Only after the cooling-off period would either party be in a position to initiate a labour disruption (following 72-hour advance notice). This means a labour disruption cannot happen before early November. December before the Christmas rush is a different story.

A typical story of how a union brings down a corporation with pay demands, banked vacation days, demanding halt on efficient automation, etc.. And a crown corporation to boot! The ole, how many workers do you actually need to change that light bulb! lol! Complacency at it's finest.

Like we need Canada Post in today's world ! P.M. Harper was well into the restructuring of Canada Post back in 2014...... doing away with door to door mail delivery , replaced with the super mailbox . Until Sunny Ways was elected and we can see how that has worked out

Canada Post is on the brink of bankruptcy, but the union and members don't care! The Corporation has current loans and borrowings of $1 billion, of which $500 million is due for repayment in July 2025. Workers want Canada Post to diversify and offer wellness checks on the elderly in neighbourhood deliveries? Would you want you post delivery person checking on your grandparent? Hope workers can find new work after they shut down.
