 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. has announced that it was shuttering its web printing press operations after filling existing orders. Staffing at the division has fallen by more than 75% from a peak of 400 employees in 2000. Mitsubishi Heavy will continue maintenance and repair services until 2036. The abrupt exit of Mitsubishi Heavy — which has built more than 700 presses since the 1960s.

The only three major web press manufactures left are Manroland Goss, Koenig & Bauer and Komori. The web offset press market worldwide has shrunk dramatically with few new installations and a lot old presses being scrapped. Some webs presses have sold at auctions for as littles as $10,000. Mitsubishi spun off or merged their sheet fed division and Ryobi offset press division creating RYOBI MHI Graphic Technology Ltd. in 2014.
