John Owen of Econolith Press Passes Away
CALGARY—
John Owen former owner of Econolith Press has passed away at the age of 92. John was active in the industry for years. He was involved in PGIA of Calgary and use to always go to CPIA conventions. John purchased Econolith Press in 1980 and took it from 3 multis to a four colour shop with 4 colour 2 up and 4 up presses . He was a big advocate of industry training and getting students into the printing industry. He pushed the Alberta Government to start a printing appenticeship program and was on several training boards.
In 1947 he worked at Western Printing a union shop as an apprentice and then went to Foothill Printer were he was for 16 years. In 1980 John and his wife bought Econolith Press and ran it till 2005 when he sold it to his son James Owen, who is still running it. John's moto was " The industry has been good to me and I have to give back to it".
