Hamilton Web Closing
HAMILTON , ONTARIO—
Toronto Star has announced the closing of Hamilton Web for April 1st . The 32 year old plant is a union shop. The plant is all cold set web printing with Goss community presses . They have six four colour towers and four one colour towers. Hamilton Web prints 56 community newspaper of various widths and in colour in a single production run. Hamilton Web employs 25 people and is owned by Torstar.
The plant has nothing to do with the closing of the Hamilton Spectator. The union was told the work will be sent to a non-union printing plant in Toronto and that the building has been sold.
"I'm shocked and surprised the company is closing a busy pressroom that was turning out quality work and on the right side of the financial ledger," said Mark Newman, unit chair of the Hamilton Web and Hamilton Community News union. "Good people are forced to find new jobs —it appears the bloom is off Torstar's new ownership."

And the consolidation of press installations continues. Was a customer of Hamilton Web since Ricter Web had the rug pulled out from under them by their bank. Moved to Ricter from Webco in London a year or two before Webco was consolidated by Quebecor accountants. Now it seems the nearest press is two hours away (on a non-grid lock day)
