Another Newspaper Pressroom Closes

Glacier Media announced it is shutting down the pressroom of the Victoria Times Colonist. Glacier Media’s decision leaves 18 press workers without jobs on September 30, 2018. The average press-room workers’ salaries ranged from $90,000 to $100,000 a year were no longer sustainable as the newspaper industry faces increasing financial pressure.

The company intends to contract their work to a facility outside of Victoria. In 2017, Glacier sold the Times Colonist building on the island to a developer with plans to transform the press hall into a brewery. Glacier Media is a public company with sales of about $230 million out of Vancouver, with about 150 newspapers, magazines, websites and data services in Western Canada.
