Staples increases use of Bullfrog Power
TORONTO—Staples Canada has announced an expansion to its partnership with Bullfrog Power—a green energy provider—to include four copy and print production locations. They are in Burnaby, BC; Mississauga, ON; Laval QC and Calgary.

“Staples has the capability to do print jobs both at the stores and at print hubs,” Shaun Lewis, vice president, sales at Bullfrog Power said. “The jobs at the print hubs are generally sent there because they’re larger and more complex so they typically can’t be done at a store. ”

Ten locations, including the Staples Canada and Staples Advantage head offices have been bullfrog-powered with clean energy since April 2013.

Future partnerships between the store and green energy provider are a possibility. “We continue to look at ways to expand and strengthen our commitment of being a sustainable organization and will continually review our options as it pertains to renewable and energy efficiency projects,” Leigh Pearson, ‎director or facility, environmental, and procurement at Staples Canada, said.

In addition to the changes at its print centres, Staples has collected 710,134 used ink cartridges through its drop off program (available at all locations) in its second quarter—an improvement from its first quarter where 684,685 cartridges were collected. Staples hopes to collect 20 million cartridges by Earth Day 2016.

The retailer also announced a line of socially conscious and eco-friendly school supplies in June in partnership with Acco and Me to We, which includes Sustainable Earth by Staples, an eco friendly filler paper made from 80% sugarcane plant fibre waste. A portion of funds from the line will go to a family or child in the Free The Children community in Latin America, Africa or Asia.
