WestRock Packaging Plant Goes Union
SALINAS, CALIF.—
WestRock voted overwhelmingly, 88-3, for representation with Teamsters Local 856, joining a growing national movement of workers in the printing industry seeking strong union representation. The newest members of Local 856 manufacture corrugated boxes for the produce industry. WestRock workers said they organized with the Teamsters to gain strong representation and a real voice on the job. Founded in 1903, the Teamsters Union represents 1.2 million workers in Canada and the U.S.
The printing industry became less and less unionized as the number of printers grew from the 1960s to the 1990s As consolidation happens in the printing industry it becomes a target for unionization again. The packaging section of the printing industry being the most likely and most vulnerable. The Canadian industry has very few union shops but that trend may be reversing in the future stating with packaging.
