More Paper Supply Cuts

Pulling out of publication papers

Two of Europe's largest paper manufacturers are cutting almost 2 million tonnes of paper capacity and over 1,500 jobs. It is expected to have some impact on the North American paper market. SCA of Sweden said it was exiting the publication papers market. SCA said it is throwing the in towel and scrap paper production at its last remaining publication grade mill. with the loss of 800 jobs.

UPM of Finland said its capacity reduction is due to “continued long-term decline in graphic paper demand combined with weakened economic outlook".UPM will close its Kaipola mill in Finland by the end of the year and decommission its three paper machines, which would result in 450 job losses and an annual reduction of 450,000 tonnes of newsprint and 270,000 tonnes of graphic grades. Paper has become a world commodity market with decreases or increases in capacity effecting prices around the world.
