Captain Canuck stands up for Canadian printers
TORONTO—Printer Gateway has teamed up with comic superhero Captain Canuck to "take on marauding giant U.S. trade printers invading Canada."
Brian Armstrong, owner of Printer Gateway, said he has been "fighting a relentless battle" against the "onslaught of powerhouse American competitors" selling at wholesale prices into the Canadian market.
Armstrong claims American trade printers are "using website storefronts to steal business."
Armstrong teamed up with Richard Comely, Captain Canuck artist, who was looking for a printer for a special edition of Captain Canuck. While completing the comic book, the partnership also launched the 100% Canadian Super Power Team Up campaign, supported by a 8.5x11 fold-out brochure featuring the comic book hero urging consumers to "stand proud and support Canadian companies."
Comely will be at Printer Gateway's booth at the Graphics Canada trade show at the International Centre in Mississauga on Nov. 11 signing copies of the comic book and posters. Graphics Canada runs Nov. 10 to 12.

I too am an immigrant to Canada, familiar with all the hardships, joys, and humorous irrationalities associated with that experience. So, we at least have some common ground from which to begin our discussion. I hope you will understand, then, when I say all of us should think carefully when making any assumptions about immigrants. I applaud you for wanting to engage in intelligent discussion based on facts. The “facts,” are these: a powerhouse, efficient, competitive organization that is driven to win is moving to Canada. It happens to be from the U.S., but it could be from anywhere. If this company is successful here, it may have substantial impact, detrimental to some, on our market. The nationalities, or ethnic origins, of existing trade house owners are not “facts” that are relevant to this discussion or to the outcome of this turn of events. We all want to see a thriving printing industry, and we all want to see Canadian businesses excel. But the winners here will be printing companies that run good businesses that are responsive to their customers, regardless of where they come from.
[Editor's note: We have removed the names of the trade shops Henry mentions because we do no know where their owners were born. Please also see the next post from the editor in response.]
