Printing bankruptcies on the rise
OTTAWA—The number of printing bankruptcies climbed in 2009 to their highest levels in at least five years. The federal Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcies reports that 56 firms shut down last year, 41 of which were in Ontario and 12 in Quebec.

In 2008, the number of bankrupt shops slipped to 25 across the country, the lowest number since at least 2004. Most of the bankruptcies were among commercial print shops.

The numbers are worse for printing support activities—generally prepress and bindery. A total of 62 companies in this category were declared bankrupt in 2009 compared to 30 in 2008.
