Transcontinental To Appeal Court Ruling That Could Kill Flyer Business
MONTREAL—
Transcontinental says it will appeal a Quebec Superior Court’s ruling that dismissed its motion to quash a Mirabel ( Montreal ) bylaw it says threatens the distribution of its retail flyers. Transcontinental says the law requiring consumers to request its Publisac would lead to the distribution method’s demise due to prohibitive costs. Transcontinental says an opt-out system is simple and effective for those who do not wish to receive the Publisac.Publisac go to more than 200,000 Montreal households.
The City says this amounts to more than 41 million flyers per year that wind up in recycling depots and landfills. The flyers printed by Transcontinental will instead be distributed by Canada Post, resulting in the loss of 16 jobs associated with Publisac. If the Montreal bylaw stands and other Cities adopt similar bylaws it could kill the printed flyer business across Canada.
