Quad/Graphics closes former Quebecor plant in Illinois
SUSSEX, WI—A former Quebecor Printing/Worldcolor plant in Mt. Morris, Illinois, purchased by Wisconsin-based Quad/Graphics last July, will be closed. The move is part of Quad/Graphics' efforts to eliminate  $225 million in costs from the combined Quad/Graphics-Worldcolor print platforms.

The plant will be closed in May. It currently employs 230 people though had employed many more in years past as a union shop. According to a State of Illinois web site it was once the largest employer in town with 740 staff. The original plant started in 1909 as Kable Brothers Printing.

Quad/Graphics has closed eight printing plants since the acquisition, including St.-Jean-sur-Richelieu in Quebec. The Worldcolor headquarters in Montreal was also closed last December. Worldcolor had previously closed its Richmond Hill, Ont. plant.

Quad/Graphics says it is on target to achieve somewhat more than $225 million in synergy savings on an annual run-rate basis within 24 months of closing on its transaction with Worldcolor. “The integration process is moving forward as expected, and while we are very focused on achieving synergies, we are equally focused on serving our customers and ensuring work is produced without disruption. We are building a strong foundation for future growth and success,” said company president and CEO Joel Quadracci in a release.

The company will work to relocate its Mt. Morris staff, and move print work to other locations.

Quad/Graphics most recent financial results can be found here. Fourth quarter 2010 net sales increased to $1.39 billion from pro forma net sales of $1.36 billion in fourth quarter 2009 and net sales of $1.21 billion in third quarter 2010.
